The North Star Roller Girls are excited to announce the formation of our new recreational roller derby team, The North Star Satellites!

2011 Tryouts

The Satellites provides an opportunity to play roller derby without the commitment or skill level required to play roller derby at the national level. Our goal is to “Provide a place to learn, skate, and have fun” for roller derby skaters of all skill levels.

Who can join?
The North Star Satellites is for female skaters 18+ interested in learning and playing the sport of roller derby.  We invite women who are interested in working on their skating and roller derby skills: retired skaters, skaters interested in eventually trying out, skaters interested in becoming referees, and those who want to play derby just for fun. We welcome all skaters at all skill levels. Come in as a beginning skater, an ice or inline skater wanting to try out quad skating, a retiree, or an existing rec skater or referee from another league who wants additional coaching and rink time.

How is it structured?
Practices are led by NSRG Satellite trainers and skaters.  The Satellites will start out in session 1 offering one level of instruction, giving each skater a chance to learn and improve on the fundamentals. At the start of each new session, skaters will have the opportunity to test into Level 2.

Fall Session:  Practices will cover land drills for general fitness, roller skating basics, and intro roller derby skills. No previous skating skills are necessary, but applicants are encouraged to develop on their own at local rinks if unable to make it around the track without grabbing onto walls or people.

Winter Session:  After session 1 is complete skaters have the option of testing into two different levels for the second 10-week session.  Skaters remaining in Level 1 will continue to work on their basic roller derby skills. Skaters that test into Level 2 will be required to pass the WFTDA minimum skills test.  Level 2 is for skaters whose basic roller skating skills—form, crossovers, stops, starts, and safe falls -- are strong and are ready to add some contact, learn the game, and scrimmage!

What are the current session dates and times?
New time: Sundays 11-1 and 1-3 rotating every other week, starting October 14th.
Please note that practice times and dates are subject to change.  (If a practice is canceled for any reason, a refund will not be granted, but we will do everything in our power to reschedule any missed session.)

How much does it cost?
The cost is $80 per 10-week session**
Payments (cash or checks only) will be due at time of registration.

Registration is December 11th 2012 - Join Satellites at NSRG_Satellites@northstarrollergirls.com for more information

**Skaters will also be required to purchase WFTDA insurance.

What gear do I need?
All participants are required to wear all of the following protective gear:

  • Wrist guards

  • Elbow pads

  • Kneepads

  • Mouthguard

  • 4 wheel (quad) roller skates

  • Athletic sneakers

What else should I bring?
Bring a water bottle.

What should I wear?
You should also come dressed to work out.  We suggest dressing in layers as the temperature at the MCC can be unpredictable. Do not wear tight jeans, short skirts or anything that restricts movement. Tip: pants, shorts or tights that cover the meaty part of the thighs are perfect as they will protect from rink rash when practicing falls and slides.

Do I have to present proof of insurance?
No. While we highly encourage attendees to have personal coverage, we don’t require proof of insurance. Participation in the Satellites is strictly at your own risk. There will not be an EMT on hand. Any type of physical activity carries its own risk, and roller skating – especially derby skating – is no exception.

Can my boyfriend, girlfriend, mom, dad, or pet ferret watch?
No. Spectators are not allowed.

Great! I’m ready! What’s next?
